A 3-year-old boy lost his life after accidentally falling into an open drain along Ada Sundha Road in Bahawalnagar.

According to the police, a passerby discovered the boy submerged in the drain water and alerted authorities, who took the body out and took it to a nearby hospital where he was claimed dead.

The child was reportedly playing close to the roadside when he slipped and fell into the open drain.

The tragic incident has once again raised concerns in Punjab over the lack of basic safety measures around open drains and construction pits.

Deaths from falling in open manholes have been a re-occurring problem in recent past and have prompted calls for stronger enforcement of safety regulations and urgent action to cover hazardous pits and manholes to avoid further tragedies.

Police has filed an FIR into the incident and an investigation is underway to determine the responsible authority for leaving the drain uncovered.
