Fighting between rival student organizations at the University of Karachi (KU) resulted in at least five people getting hurt on Thursday.

The incident, according to police, started after a bitter exchange of words between the two rival organizations took place in the lobby of the Department of International Relations of KU. The scuffle later grew violent and even spread to classrooms and staff room.

It was learned that both parties started beating each other with sticks and several people got wounded in the process. The professors who tried to pacify the situation also suffered injuries.

A large number of policemen rushed to the scene as soon as they received information about the fight and were able to restore peace in the area. The injured students were rushed to the hospital for medical attention while the teachers were provided first aid.

More than five students belonging to the rival organizations have been arrested by the police in Mobina Town police station, said the police officials.

Following the arrests, members of one student group staged a protest on University Road and Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, causing temporary disruption to traffic.

Meanwhile, the university administration has launched its own inquiry to determine the circumstances leading to the clash. Security has been tightened in and around the Department of International Relations to prevent further incidents.
