KARACHI: The brother of convicted Uzair Baloch, head of the disbanded People’s Amn Committee, was shot and seriously wounded in Karachi’s Lyari neighborhood on Thursday evening, police stated.
Police of Chakiwara, in a statement, stated that 40-year-old Zubair Baloch was shot and wounded at main Chakiwara Road, along with two passers-by who were seriously wounded. They were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Karachi.
South DIG Syed Asad Raza told that Zubair was convicted in seven criminal cases in 2012 and was freed in January 2025.
Raza further added that Zubair was sitting outside his residence in Singu Lane, where armed criminals on a motorcycle opened fire on him and then escaped from there.
Zubair was critically injured, including chest and abdomen injury, and underwent surgery. One of the wounded passers-by was also in a critical state, according to the DIG Raza.
The DIG further added that investigation in the case was being conducted by the police from various angles including rival gang and personal grudge.
A social activist from that area told on condition of anonymity that Zubair joined a “political party” a few months ago and hoisted its flags in his area.
The activist also mentioned rumours in Lyari that some gangsters who had fled to Dubai and Iran after the Karachi operation had returned following the US-Iran war, and that residents were fearful of a possible resurgence of the past gang war in the area.
They added that the attackers had covered their faces and fled when a nearby shopkeeper returned fire.
Earlier in March, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) rejected bail applications of Uzair Baloch in seven cases pertaining to murder, police encounter and possession of explosives.
