Generator fumes kill two labors in Korangi

KARACHI: Two laborers lost their lives, while four others were admitted to hospitals after a generator filled with poisonous fumes caused suffocation to them in Bhittai Colony close to Korangi Crossing in Karachi on Tuesday, according to police sources.

The tragedy took place in the area of Zaman Town police station where six laborers who lived in a house in Sector B became unconscious because of the generator smoke while they were sleeping.

The six laborers, according to police sources, turned the generator on after the power supply failed early morning and then went to sleep. After some time, when a person entered into the house, he saw the laborers unconscious and then informed other people who rushed them to hospital by using ambulances.

It is learned from the hospital authorities that two of the affected laborers, Nadeem and Waqas aged 18, were critically ill and could not be saved due to severe condition. The rest four, Dilbar, Ameen, Ubaid, and Faizan regained their consciousness after getting treatment.

PS Zaman Town SHO Ayaz Khan stated that the affected laborers worked in a local restaurant and used to live together in the quarter. Most of them came from Nawabshah,  while one was a resident of Hyderabad.

Shahidul Haq, the SHO of PS Zaman Town, said the laborers who were affected lived together in the quarters and worked for a restaurant nearby. They all came from Nawabshah except one who hails from Hyderabad.

The neighbors informed the police that there was no electricity in the area since early morning and that the workers had switched on their generator and went to bed, resulting in the generation of poisonous gas in the room.

Police visited the spot and sealed the place after carrying out the preliminary investigation.
