A financially distressed man in Lahore attempted to kill his family, including his wife and children, by giving them poison pills, police said on Wednesday.

However, the family members were saved by receiving immediate medical attention, according to law enforcers.

The man, who lives in Shahdara Town, was extremely disturbed due to his inability to manage finances amid the rising cost of living in the country.

Overwhelmed by constant stress, he administered poison to seven people, including his wife and children. Fortunately, the family was saved by prompt medical intervention.

According to a spokesperson for the City Division Police, the cops immediately transported the entire family to the hospital. Their condition is now stable, they added.

The man stated that there was not a single grain of food in the house and he was struggling to pay the rent of his house for seven months.

He confessed to poisoning his family during the initial investigation in the hospital.

The recent incident adds to a growing number of similar cases and highlights the increasing financial strain faced by many in the country, where rising energy costs have exacerbated existing economic difficulties.

Previously, a man reportedly committed suicide by stepping in front of a moving train in Dijkot after receiving an inflated electricity bill.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif recently announced a two-month discount of Rs14 per unit for domestic consumers in Punjab and Islamabad.
