In another horrifying incident of domestic violence in Faisalabad, a man reportedly assaulted his wife with a hot iron rod, burning her body, and tortured her with a stick.
According to the police, the accused, identified as Abid, regularly tortured his wife, Sana, and gave her life threats.
Police quoted the victim’s mother, who attributed this extreme behavior of her son-in-law to the divorce of Sana’s sister. She explained that Sana and her sister, Rabia, were married to two brothers, Abid and Atiq, within the same family.
Rabia had divorced Atiq after being blamed for her inability to conceive. Following this, Abid’s behavior toward Sana changed, and he began subjecting her to frequent physical abuse.
Sana’s mother also stated that Abid kept her locked at home and repeatedly threatened to kill her. Sana, the mother of two daughters, eventually managed to escape from her husband’s house and sought refuge at her parents’ home.
She is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who declared violence against women as her "redline," operationalised the Virtual Women Police Station (VWPS) on April 22, 2024, to empower women and ensure their protection against violence.
Since the inauguration of VWPS, Punjab has received a total of 114,540 complaints related to domestic violence, half of which were solved within six months.
In October, Punjab Police wrote a summary to CM Punjab to enhance the fine for domestiv violence to Rs1 million and declare it a non-baiable offence.
“Unfortunately, there was no explicit penal provision declaring domestic violence as a cognisable offence hence the first information report was lodged in only 3,365 cases out of 59,798,” whereas in all other cases, the matter was treated as non-cognisable,” the summary read.
