Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil expressed deep sorrow over the death of a 14-year-old madressah student in Swat, who was allegedly beaten to death by his teachers for skipping classes. He urged madressah teachers to adopt a compassionate approach in dealing with students, rather than resorting to violence over minor mistakes.

The incident sparked public outrage and renewed calls for strict oversight of religious seminaries to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

According to reports, the boy had skipped classes out of fear, having witnessed the harsh treatment of fellow students. He had also confided in his family about alleged sexual abuse by some teachers.

“Neither Islam teaches such cruelty, nor was this the way of our Holy Prophet (PBUH). If a child missed class for a day, the teacher could have guided him gently, but instead, he was beaten to death. Imagine the pain his parents must be going through,” said Maulana Tariq Jamil in a statement.

He criticised the untrained individuals who become teachers and abuse their position, saying, “When an unqualified man becomes a teacher with a stick in his hand, he uses it as if it were a weapon.”

Maulana Tariq Jamil also pointed to parental negligence, stating that some parents prioritise memorisation of the Quran at any cost, even if it endangers their children’s mental and physical health.

“A child may become a hafiz, but if raised in an environment of torture, he may never become a good human being,” he added.

Meanwhile, the court has handed over 11 madressah teachers arrested in connection with the case to police on a two-day physical remand. The suspects were presented before the Judicial Magistrate in Khwaza Khela.

However, the main accused, the madressah principal, and another key suspect remain at large.
