Karachi: Mayor Murtaza Wahab has reaffirmed his commitment to serving the city and working for its brighter future, stating that development work is underway on 106 roads across Karachi, and citizens will soon witness visible improvements.
Speaking to the media after attending a ceremony honoring renowned poet Raees Amrohvi, the mayor expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the BRT Green Line project and M.A. Jinnah Road.
He noted that despite approval being granted for the BRT Green Line in 2017, M.A. Jinnah Road has remained in a dilapidated state. Wahab said the BRT administration has been asked to provide clarity on the current status of the project.
Wahab added that while the mayor is often held accountable for civic issues, the institutions actually responsible must also be answerable.
Criticizing political opponents, Wahab remarked that the MQM must decide its stance and reassess its vision, while Jamaat-e-Islami’s Karachi chief, Muneem Zafar, cannot simply avoid accountability by resorting to criticism.
He further said that PKR 27 billion had already been disbursed to town administrations, and another major disclosure would be made next week, emphasizing that his fight was against hypocrisy.
The mayor expressed concern over the rise in drug abuse and theft in the city, noting that addicts are stealing electric wires and streetlights, which requires urgent preventive measures.
He stressed that the people of Karachi now clearly understand the difference between truth and falsehood, and honest dialogue is essential to address the city’s problems.
Extending birthday wishes to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Wahab praised his political, democratic, and leadership contributions, saying Bilawal had set a strong example of youth leadership and worked tirelessly for the promotion of democracy, protection of public rights, and strengthening of civilian supremacy.
He also condemned the felling of trees in the city, stating that such practices were unacceptable in a metropolis like Karachi. Instead, he asserted the importance of planting environmentally friendly trees.
