Karachi police have lodged a human trafficking case against two female employees of a private clinic in Malir after a newborn, whose family could not afford medical expenditures, was allegedly taken away from them and sold in Punjab.

According to police, the baby has been recovered and reunited with his parents. Authorities have also sealed the medical facility involved in the incident.

The case was registered at the Memon Goth police station on November 1. The complaint was filed by the baby’s father, Sarang Khan.

Police officials confirmed that the newborn was traced and recovered from Lahore. Raids are underway to arrest the suspects named in the case.

As per the FIR, Sarang Khan, a labourer from a village in Nooriabad, stated that his wife, Maheen, had gone to her parents’ home several months earlier after a dispute with him. On October 5, Maheen’s mother, Shahnaz, took her to a private clinic in Murad Memon Goth for delivery.

After a medical examination, the attending doctor advised a surgical procedure and demanded payment for it. When Shahnaz explained that they could not afford the expenses, the doctor allegedly suggested that a woman could assist them — offering to pay for the operation and adopt the child.

The family agreed to the arrangement, and the newborn boy was handed over to the woman, who was later identified as another employee of the same clinic.

The complainant said he only learned of the situation later through relatives, who informed him that his wife had given birth to a boy who had been given away from the hospital under the pretext of adoption.
