PML-N secures 25 seats in AJK assembly as election process concludes

The electoral process of the 2026 general elections for the general elections in AJK has concluded today when polling results have been announced in the two last constituencies of Bagh with one seat win each for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

With the results from Bagh, the PML-N becomes the dominant political party in the AJK Legislative Assembly by getting 25 seats whereas the PPP comes second with 12 seats.

After the results from Bagh, polling process ended as re-polling has been done at 23 polling stations in LA-15 Bagh-II and LA-16 Bagh-III constituency.

In LA-15 Central Bagh, PPP candidate Sardar Zia-ul-Qamar defeated PML-N's Mushtaq Minhas after conducting re-polling at nine polling stations. Zia-ul-Qamar won with 17,118 votes whereas the PML-N got only 15,227 and failed to win the election by 1,891 votes.

In LA-16 Eastern Bagh, the candidate of the PML-N Sardar Mir Akbar Khan won with 20,796 votes against PPP's Sardar Qamar-uz-Zaman who has 16,963 votes. Mir Akbar won the contest by 3,833 votes.

The results have further boosted the power base of the PML-N in the AJK Assembly and put it in a better position to form the next government as the party won the largest number of directly elected seats in the three-phase election whereas the PPP remained in second place.

It is expected that the PML-N will also get six reserved seats which include the seats for Ulema-o-Mashaikh, overseas Kashmiris and technocrats.

Elections in AJK have been held in three phases. The PML-N has maintained its good electoral performance in all three phases where it got the majority of directly elected seats whereas the PPP has won many important constituencies in the elections.

By the victories of the candidates Sardar Zia-ul-Qamar and Sardar Mir Akbar Khan, the PPP and the PML-N have won one seat each from the last two constituencies where polling was remaining to be held.

With 25 seats in hand currently, the PML-N has maintained its clear advantage in the race for the formation of the next government. Its additional seats from reserved category are also expected to further boost its parliamentary performance.

The PPP, which has won 12 seats in the election, is going to emerge as the principal opposition party in the new AJK Assembly whereas other political parties and independents are going to play a significant role as the process of government formation
