American woman stranded in Karachi after online boyfriend ditches her

An American woman's online romance with a Karachi boy took a devastating turn when he abandoned her after she moved to Pakistan to be with him. Stranded without money to return to the US, she appealed to Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori for help.

Leaving behind her family and friends, Onia Andrew Abson, 33, had flown from the US, only to find herself stranded and alone.

Onia is a mother of two and she fell in love with a 19-year-old from Karachi's Garden East neighborhood.  Driven by love, she then traveled to Pakistan.

Onia’s plight was revealed when Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori landed at Karachi airport and saw a crowd around her, prompting him to investigate the matter.

Onia revealed she had left everything behind, including divorcing her husband, to come to Pakistan for her boyfriend.  However, her arrival took a devastating turn when he abandoned her, pressured by his family's disapproval of their age difference.

The abandonment left her traumatised. With her visa expired and no money or accommodation, Onia has been stranded at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi for the past seven days.

She obtained a 30-day travel permit to Pakistan in October after applying for a visa that same month. Upon arriving in Karachi and meeting her boyfriend, she discovered his affection had been a pretense and he rejected her.

On Monday night, the situation took a dramatic turn when she met with Governor Tessori. She explained that she was penniless and unable to return to the US, as her visa had expired.

To help her return home, Governor Tessori arranged a visa and plane ticket for Onia.

Meanwhile, the young man Onia met in Karachi has gone into hiding, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
