Water supply to be suspended in many Karachi areas due to pipeline repair

KARACHI: The port city will be confronted with a shortage of 200 million gallons of water each day for at least four days to come as the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) plans to commence repairs on its leaking main water line with a diameter of 84 inches on Monday.

The leak was detected at the Phase-I main water line in Block 19 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal. It has prompted an urgent operation of repair and maintenance works, to begin at 12 noon on Monday and to take 96 hours to complete.

The phase-I main pipeline project, which incorporates the University Road stretch around Block 19, is part of the high-priority K-4 project for water augmentation.

A spokesman for the KWSC said that repair work was being done to stabilise and strengthen the water supply system of the city ahead of Ramazan. He explained that in order to have smooth supply of water during the holy month, it was decided to carry out the repair work, adding that the process would be watched by specialised teams with close coordination in order to avert disruptions.

These include Landhi, Korangi, Malir, Shah Faisal, Gulshan, Jinnah, Chanesar, Saddar, Lyari and Clifton.

The spokesman said the water supply from Dhabeji Pumping Station would be reduced for some time as per the need, while the supply from other pumping stations would continue without interruption. It would mean, he added that a major quantum of daily water requirements of the citizens would continue to be fulfilled.

He added that the city usually gets about 650 million gallons of water per day and, even with the temporary cutback, it would still get approximately 450 million gallons daily.

The spokesman said that the utility was making all possible efforts to accomplish the repair work as quickly as possible.
