HYDERABAD / KARACHI: The PPP on Sunday organized rallies throughout Sindh to protest against India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and its plans to divert water of Pakistani origin from the Indus river system.
Water, and the treaty itself, have remained a controversial subject between India and Pakistan ever since New Delhi went ahead unilaterally in suspending the agreement last year, which was followed soon after by a small war between the two countries in May 2025.
The protesters organized rallies in several cities and districts of Pakistan, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Thar, Mirpurkhas, Larkana, Shikarpur, Naushahro Feroze and Dadu, with the slogan: “Marsoon Marsoon, Sindhu na desoon” (We will die, but we won’t give up the Indus).
Speaking at a rally in Hyderabad, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, President of PPP Sindh wing, said that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has taken up the matter globally and will take it to its logical conclusion.”
It began from Shahbaz Building Chowk and concluded outside the local press club in the evening. PPP district president and MNA Tariq Shah Jamot, general secretary Waseem Rajput, Hyderabad divisional president Ajiz Dhamra, along with many others, addressed the crowd as well.
Khuhro maintained that PPP had always supported Pakistan due to its federalist nature. He further maintained that Bilawal had challenged the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an international conference, adding that now Modi “would get an answer.”
Being an MPA Khuhro maintained that since PPP had made the decision of raising the question of water among the masses, PPP would mobilise masses in all villages.
He mentioned that Bilawal had resolved to go among the masses regarding the Indus waters of Pakistan. He said that PPP followers would make Bilawal the prime minister of Pakistan so that he could serve the interests of his country.
Indus Water Treaty (IWT), brokered by the World Bank in 1960, distributes the water of the Indus river system among India and Pakistan. Eastern rivers – Ravi, Beas and Sutlej are assigned to India, whereas western rivers – Indus, Jhelum and Chenab are assigned to Pakistan.
