Egypt made history on Friday by reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Dallas.
The Pharaohs took the lead early in the match when Emam Ashour scored with a header in the 13th minute. The move started from a free-kick by Mohamed Salah, with Karim Hafez sending in the cross.
Australia levelled in the 55th minute after an own goal by Mohamed Hany, whose defensive header went past his own goalkeeper.
Neither side could find a winner in extra time, although Egypt created more chances. Salah missed a close-range opportunity as the match moved into penalties. In the shootout, Australia missed two key penalties, including their opening kick by Harry Souttar.
Salah converted his spot-kick with a Panenka, while Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning penalty to send Egypt through.
Egypt will now face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round as they aim to continue their historic World Cup run.
