Pakistan's women's football team pulled off a historic upset by defeating a much stronger Indonesian side 2-0 in their Group D match of the 2026 AFC Women's Asian Cup qualifiers held in Tangerang on Wednesday.

Despite being ranked 152nd by FIFA, 62 places below Indonesia (ranked 95th), the girls in green delivered a disciplined and determined performance, overpowering their higher-ranked opponents.

Goalkeeper Zeeyana Jivraj played a pivotal role in the victory, maintaining a clean sheet with several key saves as Indonesia took eight shots on target. Her efforts kept Pakistan in control and prevented any breakthrough by the hosts.

Pakistan took the lead early when Nadia Khan scored in the 9th minute, marking her fifth international goal. Soon after, Suha Hirani doubled the lead in the 18th minute, calmly converting a penalty to put Pakistan firmly ahead.

Although Indonesia dominated possession with 63% and outshot Pakistan 20 to 5, the Pakistani side stuck to a well-organised game plan and executed it with precision. While Indonesia hit the post once, Pakistan came close to scoring on three occasions, striking the post three times out of their five attempts.

Pakistan will face Kyrgyzstan in their final group-stage match on July 5. This was Pakistan women's football team's first international victory since September 2023.

Earlier in the tournament, Pakistan suffered a heavy 8-0 defeat against Chinese Taipei, highlighting the significance of this comeback victory.

The Pakistan women’s national football team was officially formed in 2010. While the team has yet to qualify for the AFC Women's Asian Cup or the FIFA Women's World Cup, it has participated in several SAFF Championships and continues to grow as a promising force in regional football.
