Pakistan's T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha is likely to be named the all-format captain following strong backing from selectors, new white-ball coach Mike Hesson, and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, according to board sources.
The 31-year-old, initially appointed as a stand-in T20I captain for the Zimbabwe series, has impressed with his leadership approach, tactical clarity, and decision-making.
"Salman has gained unanimous support from the selection committee, Hesson, and Chairman Naqvi, who believe he should lead in all formats," a PCB insider revealed.
If confirmed, the move would see Mohammad Rizwan (current ODI captain) and Shan Masood (Test skipper) replaced. Rizwan's strained relations with selector Aaqib Javed, particularly after Pakistan's 3-0 ODI loss in New Zealand, have reportedly diminished his standing. Meanwhile, Masood's tenure has been marred by poor results, including nine defeats in 12 Tests since December 2023, including a historic home loss to Bangladesh.
Pakistan's upcoming schedule includes T20Is against Bangladesh (July) and West Indies (August), followed by a Test series against South Africa (October). The PCB is expected to announce the decision post-Eid.
Analysts suggest the leadership shake-up aims to revive Pakistan's fortunes after recent struggles, including a last-place finish in the current World Test Championship cycle.
