Karachi to receive 50 new Double-Decker buses in October

The Sindh government has decided to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service from September as part of its efforts to modernise the province's public transport system.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Senior officials, including Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, TransKarachi CEO Zubair Channa and Yellow Line Project Director Kamal Dayo, reviewed progress on ongoing transport projects.

The meeting was informed that 50 new double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi in October. In addition, 1,000 electric buses will be inducted into the public transport fleet in phases by the end of the year.

Officials also approved new Peoples Bus Service routes connecting Larkana with Qambar and Qambar with Shahdadkot to improve transport facilities in the region.

To ease traffic congestion, the meeting decided to open a portion of the mixed traffic lane on University Road to the public in September.

Sharjeel directed authorities to complete all depots for the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project within the stipulated timeframe and ensure that newly approved bus routes become operational without delay.
