At least 95 dead, hundreds of tourists missing in China-Nepal border flash flooding

At least 95 people have been killed and hundreds of tourists are missing after a devastating flood triggered by mud and rocks falling into a river along the Nepal-China border in Tibet.

According to a foreign news agency, videos of the incident on Wednesday showed dozens of people being swept away by powerful floodwaters near the border.

Authorities in both Nepal and China have warned that the death toll could rise and that the disaster has caused widespread destruction.

In Nepal, several homes, roads and power projects were swept away by the floodwaters. Meanwhile, authorities in Tibet said there were fears of significant casualties in Gyirong County after a landslide struck the border crossing.

According to China’s state-run news agency, the landslide occurred on the Nepali side of the border, affecting Gyirong Port and damaging roads, communications infrastructure and power facilities in the border area.

Nepal’s Tourism Authority said that at least 384 tourists are missing in the affected area, including 105 Indian, 93 Nepali, 12 British and 3 American nationals.

In a separate report, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said that eight South Korean nationals were also missing in Nepal. A police official confirmed that 95 bodies had so far been recovered following the floods.
