Australian police have thwarted a possible violent attack by arresting seven individuals near Sydney. The operation was carried out while investigations into a recent shooting incident at Bondi Beach were still underway.
According to ABC News, New South Wales Police said they had received intelligence suggesting that a violent act was being planned in a certain area. Acting on this information, the Tactical Operations Unit conducted an operation on Thursday evening on George Street in Liverpool.
Police stated that heavily armed officers rammed a vehicle to stop it and detained the seven occupants inside.
Subsequently, police and riot squad personnel made the suspects sit on the ground near a fence, handcuffed them, and conducted searches.
Viral videos show police officers dressed in tactical gear, while the suspects can be seen sitting or lying on the ground. One individual appeared to have visible facial injuries sustained during the arrest.
Police clarified that, so far, no direct link has been established between the arrested individuals and the recent terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, though further investigations are ongoing.
Australian media reported that the suspects were traveling in a white vehicle and were allegedly heading toward Bondi Beach.
Police have confirmed that the operation has been completed and inquiries are continuing.
It is worth noting that a terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on Sunday evening resulted in the deaths of 16 people and is being described as Australia’s deadliest shooting incident in nearly 30 years.
