A tragic incident took place in Adamuz in southern Spain where two high speed trains crashed into each other as one of the trains derailed and smashed into the other.

The deadly crash claimed the lives of at least 21 people and injured dozens more.

The accident occurred at about 7:30–7:45 p.m. Spain time, when an Iryo service traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and crashed into an oncoming Renfe Alvia train from Madrid to Huelva. Both trains subsequently derailed, with one falling down an embankment.

Police and rail operator confirmed that around 400 passengers were aboard collectively in both the trains. According to reports, 100 people were injured, ranging from mild to serious cases. 

Rescue workers continued the rescue operation through the night to rescue survivors and recover the dead. 

Spanish Transport Minister described the incident as “really strange” as it happened on a recently renovated, straight track, he claimed that the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Pedro Sánchez, the PM of Spain called the crash a moment of national sorrow. Meanwhile the train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended indefinitely. 

According to rescue teams, the number of casualties could go up as they dig through the trains’ wreckage.
