Five people have been injured in a knife attack Sunday at Penn Station in New York City as the area gets ready to welcome two major sports tournaments, the NBA finals and football's World Cup championship.
"The suspect is under arrest; victims are all civilians – one with critical injury, two with moderate injury, and two with minor injury. They were taken to the hospital," New York Fire Department stated in a short statement.
"Perp in custody. Operations ongoing," it added.
Not much information about the stabbing has come out yet. The photographer who happened to be at the scene later discovered bandages, surgical gloves, and blood stains scattered around track numbers five and six, where the police have established a cordon.
The stabbing incident happened at one of the busiest railroad transit hubs in the country when the city is preparing for two mega sports events to be held next week: the NBA championships and football world cup.
Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, situated right above Penn Station, will stage matches three and four of the NBA finals featuring the New York Knicks vs the San Antonio Spurs teams Monday and Wednesday.
