Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has declared that a “new chapter” is unfolding in the Strait of Hormuz, criticising what he described as the United States’ “failed” regional strategy.
In a statement carried by state media, Khamenei said that developments over recent months signal a shift in the balance of power in the Persian Gulf, following what he termed as unsuccessful American efforts in the region.
Reflecting on the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, he noted that the waterway has historically drawn the attention of foreign powers, referencing events such as the expulsion of Portuguese forces from Hormuz in 1622.
Khamenei also pointed to the recent conflict involving the United States and Israel, stating that Iranian forces had demonstrated resilience and strength. He claimed that these developments highlight a broader regional shift.
According to the statement, Iran envisions a future for the Gulf region that excludes American influence, instead focusing on regional stability and prosperity led by local nations.
The Iranian leader further criticised the US military presence in the Middle East, arguing that it has contributed to instability rather than security.
He asserted that American bases in the region are unable to guarantee even their own protection, questioning their role as security providers.
The statement was published by Islamic Republic News Agency to mark National Persian Gulf Day, which commemorates the removal of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622.
