Despite his grandparents being Nazis during World War II, a 23-year-old German named Edgar has become a passionate supporter of Israel and attempted to enlist in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), as reported by Jerusalem Post.
Edgar, who has no Jewish background, was raised with pro-Israel views and had long wished to visit the country.
Following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, Edgar felt compelled to act. "I was watching from home as Jews endured something reminiscent of the Holocaust. I checked on my friends, but I knew I had to do more," he said.
In January, Edgar traveled to Israel and began volunteering at various military bases. Inspired by his experiences, he sought to join the IDF. However, as a non-Jewish foreigner, his enlistment was denied.
Undeterred, Edgar persistently visited government offices, including the Interior Ministry and the Population and Immigration Authority, but faced continued rejection.
"Even if I can't enlist, I would go through it all again. Coming to Israel has been an incredible experience," Edgar stated.
Until his tourist visa expires, Edgar plans to remain in Israel, continuing his efforts to join the IDF.
