Germany and Italy has called on Israel to respect international law and avoid “irresponsible actions” after its forces intercepted a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla in international waters.

In a joint statement, Berlin and Rome said they were closely monitoring developments concerning the Global Sumud Flotilla, which they said was seized overnight in international waters off the coast of Greece.

“We call for full respect of applicable international law and restraint from irresponsible actions. Our utmost priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens, in line with international humanitarian law,” the statement read.

Both governments reiterated their support for international efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza Strip in accordance with established legal frameworks and standards.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said its naval forces intercepted and seized more than 20 vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea, detaining around 175 activists on board. The interception reportedly occurred near the Greek island of Crete, located hundreds of nautical miles from Israel.

The flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, had departed two weeks ago from the Italian island of Sicily, with a total of 58 vessels aiming to challenge Israel’s longstanding blockade of Gaza.

Israel has maintained a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, contributing to severe humanitarian conditions for its estimated 2.4 million residents. According to reports, Israel’s military offensive launched in October 2023 has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries, alongside widespread destruction across the enclave.
