An extremist mob comprising members of several Hindutva organisations stormed a 200-year-old mausoleum in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur, claiming the tomb was built over the site of a temple. Videos circulating on social media showed chaos, vandalism, and violence, as police struggled to control the situation.
The incident took place on Monday in Abunagar area, days after an extremist group had warned local authorities that they would hold a protest at the site and perform Hindu religious rites.
Despite police deployment, a large crowd armed with wooden sticks forced its way into the Eidgah and stormed the mausoleum, raising saffron flags and chanting Hindu slogans.
Eyewitness accounts and video evidence show the protesters pelting stones, desecrating graves by striking them with slippers, sticks, and stones, and damaging part of the historic structure.

However, despite the footage, police denied reports of vandalism. Authorities have registered an FIR against 10 identified and 150 unidentified individuals and said efforts are underway to arrest the suspects.
According to Indian media, a heavy police contingent was deployed in the area to prevent violence and maintain order, but the attack has sparked anger among local Muslims.
Law enforcement remains stationed in the area to deter further unrest and communal tensions.
Local BJP leaders were also reportedly involved in the incident. Mukhlal Pal, president of the district unit, claimed the mosque was built over a Thakur Ji temple.
