In a first-of-its-kind decision, a Turkish court has ruled that interactions on social media, such as “liking” other women’s posts, can be considered as evidence in divorce cases.

The Court of Cassation, Türkiye’s highest judicial body, made the ruling in a case of a couple from Kayseri.

The court found that the husband, identified as S.B., had “undermined marital trust” by repeatedly liking posts from other women on social media platforms.

Both S.B. and his wife, H.B., had filed for divorce. According to local reports, the wife accused her husband of belittling her, failing to provide financial support, and violating his duty of loyalty by engaging with other women online.

The husband, on the other hand, claimed that his wife insulted his father, displayed excessive jealousy, and made offensive remarks on social media.

After reviewing the evidence, the court determined that the husband bore greater responsibility for the breakdown of the marriage.

He was ordered to pay damages to his wife as well as ongoing spousal support.
