A woman was detained at the University of Science and Research in Tehran on Saturday after she was seen walking on campus in her underwear.
Videos capturing the incident, which show the woman interacting with security personnel before her arrest, have since gone viral, fueling widespread discussion on social media about her possible motivations.
BBC Persian confirmed that the incident occurred on November 2nd at Block 1 of Azad University of Science and Research.
In the viral videos, the woman is seen sitting on a raised platform in a campus corridor, surrounded by both male and female university security officers.
Other footage captures her walking around the campus grounds in her underwear, though the events leading up to this are unclear. One clip, apparently filmed from a classroom, shows her near Block 1, where she appears to remove her shorts.
Shortly after, police arrive, and the woman was taken into custody.
International media and social media reports suggest her actions might have been a protest against Iran’s mandatory hijab laws and alleged harassment by university security personnel.
Amir Kabir News, a Telegram channel, claims the woman removed her clothes in protest after being confronted by Basij forces for not wearing a hijab and reportedly having her clothing torn by security.
