Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that authorities have fully controlled the situation.

“The situation has come under total control,” Araghchi said, while speaking to foreign diplomats in Tehran.

He alleged that protests spiralled into violence as part of a wider plot. “That’s why the demonstrations turned violent and bloody, to give an excuse to the American president to intervene,” he said.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said that Iran was seeking talks with Washington, days after he warned of possible military action in response to Tehran’s violent crackdown on protesters.

His comments came as rights activists reported that at least 544 people have been killed during nationwide demonstrations, making the unrest one of the deadliest in recent years.

Tehran did not immediately respond to Trump’s statement. The developments followed a visit to Iran over the weekend by Oman’s foreign minister, whose country has long played a behind-the-scenes role as a go-between for the United States and Iran during periods of tension.

It remains uncertain what Iran could offer if negotiations move forward. Trump has repeatedly demanded strict limits on Iran’s nuclear programme and its ballistic missile capabilities.

Iranian officials, however, have consistently argued that their missile programme is essential for national defence and is not open to negotiation.

Repeating his earlier stance, Araghchi again blamed foreign powers for the unrest, telling diplomats that Iran was facing an orchestrated campaign from abroad, while insisting that the government had regained control of the situation.
