An investigative report by Australian media has revealed a discrepancy in the reported death toll in Gaza, suggesting that the actual number of Palestinian casualties far exceeds official estimates.
The report claims that approximately 200,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in Gaza since October 7, 2023, citing research conducted by British health experts.
The massive figure represents about 8 percent of the population, according to the report.
The World Health Organisation and international human rights centres have also expressed concerns about the accuracy of the reported death toll, with many questioning the official numbers.
A major obstacle in verifying the death toll is the inaccessibility of Palestinian bodies under the rubble, according to international human rights organisations.
The devastating Israeli bombardment has destroyed hospitals in Gaza, crippling the healthcare system's ability to record deaths accurately, the report noted.
Some hospitals remain partially functional, but the destruction of the digital system used to track fatalities has resulted in a "significant underreporting of casualties".
Australian media reports that accurate data on the number of casualties has not been available for several months due to the destruction of health facilities, and other issues.
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, the ongoing Israeli aggression has claimed the lives of over 42,700 Palestinians and injured more than 100,000 since October 7, 2023.
Alarmingly, women and children make up the majority of the victims.
