Israel has claimed to have destroyed approximately "70 to 80 percent" of Syria's military capabilities in its recent large-scale military offensive, which comes amid ongoing chaos following the ousting of former president Bashar al-Assad.
On Tuesday, the Israeli army confirmed to journalists that its primary objective of targeting key military installations in Syria had been achieved.
The operation, dubbed "Operation Bashan Arrow," a Biblical kingdom situated in the ancient land of Canaan, believed to be located in modern-day southern Syria and eastern Jordan.
The Hebrew term "Bashan" translates to "flat or level terrain.
Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights buffer zone, which includes an area once known as Mount Bashan (now Jabal Al-Arab or Jabal Al-Druze in southern Syria), has raised significant concerns.
Israel's annexation of this area breaches the 1974 demilitarisation agreement.
The Israeli military's targets in this operation included a range of military assets, such as combat aircraft, naval systems, surface-to-surface missiles, and weapons production facilities .
On Sunday, following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad’s government by rebel forces, Israel capitalised on the chaos to seize the Golan Heights buffer zone, a significant violation of the 1974 agreement.
Mount Hermon, a critical strategic point and the highest peak in Syria, has also been annexed by Israel.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Israeli airstrikes targeted the Shayrat airbase in Homs and a military installation in northern Raqqa. Among these attacks, Israel also struck a chemical weapons production site in Syria.
The opposition forces currently holding power in Syria have not released an official statement regarding the Israeli offensive. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that the Golan Heights will remain part of Israel "for eternity."
The United Nations, along with Arab nations including Iran, Iraq, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, has condemned the Israeli incursion into Syrian territories.
According to reports, the Israeli army is now just a few kilometers away from Damascus as it intensifies its operations on the city’s outskirts.
