KARACHI: The government has raised the price of jet fuel used by commercial airlines by Rs40.35 per litre, increasing operating costs for carriers and making higher airfares more likely.

According to sources, the latest revision has pushed the price of jet fuel to Rs291.55 per litre. The increase comes just two weeks after a previous adjustment, taking the total rise in jet fuel prices over the past fortnight to Rs53.58 per litre.

Sources attributed the latest hike to higher international oil prices, noting that the increased fuel costs are expected to put additional financial pressure on airlines and could lead to an increase in ticket prices.

Meanwhile, the government announced on Friday that petroleum prices will now be reviewed and notified on a daily basis, replacing the previous weekly pricing mechanism. The decision comes amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran, which have heightened volatility in global oil markets and raised concerns over fuel supplies.

Under the revised pricing system, the ex-depot price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) has been increased by Rs31.05 per litre, from Rs323.30 to Rs354.35, while petrol prices have risen by Rs5.44 per litre, from Rs310.71 to Rs316.15. The new rates came into effect on July 18, 2026.

Officials said the daily review mechanism would enable domestic fuel prices to respond more quickly to fluctuations in international oil markets while helping prevent supply shortages and speculative hoarding.

Pakistan had previously revised fuel prices on a fortnightly basis before shifting to weekly reviews during the initial phase of the US-Iran conflict.

With tensions escalating again following fresh military exchanges and growing concerns over potential disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the government has now adopted daily price revisions to ensure a stable fuel supply and improve transparency in the pricing process.
