The woman who was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis has been identified as Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother and poet.

According to the victim's family, Good was a US citizen born in Colorado and had no criminal record apart from a traffic violation. She moved to Minneapolis last year from Kansas City, Missouri, and often shared posts online describing her experiences in the city.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning shortly after Good dropped her six-year-old son off at school. Quoting her former husband, a media report said that she and her current partner then came across ICE agents on a snow-covered street.

The situation escalated quickly, and an ICE officer fired several shots at close range into the vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security said that officers opened fire after being obstructed during an immigration enforcement operation. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said that Good failed to follow instructions to exit the vehicle and attempted to hit an ICE officer, who was later taken to hospital and released.

The Trump administration later described Good as a domestic terrorist, a claim her ex-husband strongly rejected, saying she was not politically active and had never taken part in protests. He said that she was a devoted Christian.

Good studied creative writing at Old Dominion University and won the school’s undergraduate poetry award in 2020. She later co-hosted a podcast with her second husband, who died in 2023. She is survived by three children.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, described her as deeply caring and compassionate. “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known,” she said. “She was extremely compassionate. She took care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
