People in Iraq faced serious breathing difficulties as intense sandstorms swept through the country, prompting the closure of airports in several provinces due to extremely poor visibility.

The sandstorm struck central and southern Iraq, leading to over 1,000 individuals being hospitalised with respiratory problems. The situation began to gradually improve by Tuesday morning.

Videos circulating online showed various areas covered in a thick orange haze, with visibility reduced to almost zero and a blanket of dust covering everything.

According to reports, around 700 patients in the southern province of Muthanna sought medical attention for breathing difficulties, while hospitals in Najaf province treated over 250 similar cases.

Foreign media also reported that 322 people, including children, were hospitalised in Diwaniyah province. Meanwhile, more than 530 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhi Qar and Basra provinces.

The sandstorm severely affected visibility, forcing authorities to shut down airports in Najaf and Basra as a precautionary measure.

It is worth noting that sand and dust storms are common in Iraq, but their frequency and intensity have increased in recent years due to climate change.

The United Nations has listed Iraq among the five countries most vulnerable to climate-related impacts.
