One of the alleged gunmen involved in the deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney has been identified as Naveed Akram, a resident of the city’s south-west, according to a senior law enforcement official.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said police were conducting a raid on Akram’s home in Bonnyrigg on Sunday evening, hours after the attack.

At least 12 people were killed when gunmen opened fire on a crowd gathered for the first night of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival marking the endurance of faith.

NSW Police confirmed that one of the two attackers was shot dead at the scene, while the second was critically injured and taken into custody.

Authorities have not yet clarified whether Akram was the suspect killed or the one arrested.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said one of the attackers was previously known to police, but only in a limited capacity.

“The person we know has very, very little history with police,” he said, adding that the suspect was not someone authorities were actively monitoring.

Investigations into the attack are ongoing.
