US Navy Secretary John C. Phelan has been abruptly removed from his post, with no reason given for the immediate request for his resignation.
President Donald Trump had nominated Phelan for the role in November 2024.
At the time, he faced criticism over his lack of experience in naval affairs, the military, national security policy, or the defence industry.
Phelan appeared before a Senate committee in February 2025 and was confirmed to the position in March 2025 by 62 votes to 30.
Hung Cao will now assume the role as acting Navy Secretary.
It is worth noting that the US Navy Secretary oversees the administrative, financial, and policy matters of the Navy.
Earlier, during the Iran conflict, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had forced General Randy George to step down with immediate effect.
