The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6–3 on Thursday in favor of President Donald Trump, affirming the federal government's authority to limit access to asylum processing when officials determine that border facilities are overwhelmed by crossings from Mexico.

The decision, supported by the court's conservative majority, reversed a lower court ruling that had found the practice inconsistent with federal law.

Trump's administration indicated that it may consider reinstating the policy, known as "metering," which had been discontinued under former President Joe Biden.

Under this approach, immigration authorities could prevent asylum seekers from entering processing queues at the border and postpone consideration of their claims for an indefinite period.

The ruling was one of two immigration-related decisions issued by the Supreme Court that day that favored the Trump administration.

Metering is distinct from a broader asylum restriction policy introduced by Trump after returning to office last year, which seeks to deny entry to many asylum seekers at the border and remains the subject of ongoing legal proceedings.
