In a headline-grabbing gesture, a Syrian couple from the central province of Homs has named their newborn son Trump Ahmed Al Sattouf, honoring former U.S. President Donald Trump following his reported move to ease sanctions on Syria, Gulf News reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the couple's decision came in the wake of Trump’s high-profile visit to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, where he announced the lifting of certain U.S. sanctions on Damascus.
The naming has sparked widespread attention across Arab media—generating admiration, satire, and public debate in equal measure.
"In many parts of the Arab world, naming a child after a political figure can be a symbol of hope or appreciation," the report noted. For the Al Sattouf family, the decision was deeply personal.
“We’ve suffered for too long. Maybe this is a sign that things will change,” said the baby’s father in a local interview. Naming his son after Trump, he added, was a gesture of optimism in the face of years of hardship.

The move may be symbolic, but it has drawn attention to the plight of ordinary Syrians who have lived under decades of U.S. sanctions. Initially imposed in 1979, these measures intensified after Syria's civil war erupted in 2011, culminating in sweeping restrictions under the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act in 2019.
These sanctions have crippled Syria’s economy, contributing to soaring poverty, hyperinflation, and acute shortages of basic necessities such as fuel, medicine, and food. For many families, any sign of international reprieve is met with a mix of cautious hope and public expression.
Whether Trump Ahmed Al Sattouf will grow up to understand the political weight of his name remains to be seen, but for now, he has become a symbol of a family's hope amid years of struggle.
