A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the “unprovoked and senseless” murder of Saudi Arabian student Mohammed Algasim in Cambridge, UK.

The court heard that Algasim, 20, was stabbed in the neck outside student accommodation in August 2025 after an incident near Cambridge railway station.

The attacker, identified as Chas Corrigan, a construction worker from Holbrook Road, Cambridge, was found guilty of murder following a trial. Prosecutors said the assault took place after an evening of drinking and drug use, during which Corrigan used a kitchen knife in the attack.

At Cambridge Crown Court, Corrigan was sentenced to life in prison and ordered to serve a minimum term of 22 years and six months.

The court was told that Algasim had been studying at a language school and was sitting with friends when the attack occurred.

During the trial, Corrigan claimed he was carrying a kitchen knife for protection, saying he had previously been attacked. He also said he did not know the group and believed he had approached them to ask for a lighter.

He further stated that he returned to the group after hearing shouting and thought he was being spoken to, before the stabbing took place.

Corrigan’s father, Peter Corrigan, was also sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to assisting an offender by hiding high-visibility clothing worn by his son during the incident.
