Cocoa extract and very dark chocolate reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and help maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels, according to a study published in Medical News Today.
A fresh meta-study stated that consuming cocoa is effective for cardiovascular disease risk factors.
“Cocoa is a good source of catechins and other polyphenolic compounds like flavanols known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can support cardiovascular health,” said Michelle Routhenstein, preventive cardiology dietitian.
The researcher analysed the samples of 1986 people, of which 1,110 participants consumed cocoa extract and dark chocolate while 876 participants consumed a placebo or white or milk chocolate containing less than 70% cocoa for four weeks.
The study revealed an 8.35 mg/dL reduction in overall cholesterol, a 9.47 mg/dL reduction in LDL cholesterol, a 4.91 mg/dL lowering of fasting blood glucose, 2.52 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure, a 1.58 mmHg lowering of diastolic blood pressure.
However, Jayne Morgan, cardiologist and the Executive Director of Health and Community Education at the Piedmont Healthcare Corporation in Atlanta suggested more heart-healthy foods, including fatty fish, olive oil, nuts, berries, beans, green leafy vegetables, and whole grains.
“Moreover, caution should still be exercised with pregnancy,” said Morgan.
Though some research suggested potential benefits in moderation, pregnant individuals should be especially mindful of chocolate’s added sugar and caffeine content.
