Veteran actor Rubina Ashraf has stated that artists merely reflect societal realities, and the criticism levelled at Barzakh for its portrayal of homosexuality is unjustified.

She argued that Pakistani television has previously tackled even bolder subjects.

Rubina Ashraf appeared on a morning show on a private TV channel, where she shared her insights into the ongoing controversy surrounding the fantasy drama Barzakh, which features a romantic relationship between two characters.

“Television reflects what is happening in society; it doesn't create it. Instead, society provides the stories that are portrayed on television. As artists, it is part of our job to showcase all facets of societal reality,” the Hasrat actor opined.

“People are criticising Barzakh and have raised many objections to it, but we have also done Udaari where we depicted incest, abortions, and illicit relationships because these are issues prevalent in society,” Rubina maintained.

She said that people assume artists glorify such stories, but in reality, they are meant to be a learning experience.

“We have portrayed similar and even bolder narratives in the past, yet they never sparked this level of outrage. The rise of social media has empowered people to voice their opinions more forcefully,” she continued.

The Gul-e-Rana actor urged, "Social media should be used for constructive criticism, not trivial nitpicking."

She said if people believe homosexuality should not be depicted, “then they should openly address the societal issues surrounding it where these practices occur. A drama cannot promote homosexuality.

‘We all know there are places in our country where young boys are subjected to sexual abuse. This is an open secret, yet no one wants to discuss it,” the actress added.

Rubina Ashraf emphasised the need for open discussion about this issue and urged parents to “protect their children from going into such direction.”
