Lollywood superstar Fawad Khan faced backlash for starring in Barzakh, a fantasy drama criticised for featuring same-sex relationships. This is the second time the actor has appeared in a project with pro-LGBTQ content, sparking criticism from netizens.

Previously, he portrayed a gay character in the popular Bollywood film Kapoor & Sons. While his role centered on struggling to conceal his sexual identity from his conservative family, it did not contain explicit scenes of Fawad with a male character.

Producer Karan Johar revealed that numerous mainstream Indian actors had declined the role of a homosexual character in Kapoor & Sons before Fawad Khan ultimately accepted it.

Speaking about his role in Kapoor & Sons in an interview with Hindustan Times, the Maula Jatt star said, “Everyone has a tendency to be gay. But this movie is not about sexuality. It is just about a family that is trying to sort out their differences.”

“Even if someone plays a character like that, why will he or she become an outcast? Give it some years, and things will become normal. In the future, everyone who gets worried about these things, will learn to accept them. If someone is a certain way, he or she just is,” he maintained.

While Fawad Khan does not portray a homosexual character in his latest fantasy drama, Barzakh, the series has faced criticism for featuring romantic scenes between two male characters.

As a result, the actor's appearance in projects with LGBTQ+ themes has become a subject of public debate.

Barzakh, starring Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, was highly anticipated before its release due to the reunion of the on-screen couple and its unconventional fantasy storyline.

The portrayal of two male characters with unconventional sexual orientations prompted fans to accuse the series director of promoting a "Western agenda".

Netizens called for a boycott of the series, with many stating that it indoctrinates people to accept same-sex relationships, which goes against their religious and cultural values.
