Pakistani fashion designer Maria B has criticised transgender rights activist Mehrub Moiz Awan for referencing a "revoked Fatwa" regarding transgender marriages during a podcast appearance.
The transgender person shared her views in a podcast titled "Transgender Marriage Fatwa: The Rise of Transphobia, Populism, & Western Philosophy."
During the podcast, Mehrub, quoting a fatwa allegedly issued by the Barelvi school of thought, claimed it permits transgender men to marry women and transgender women to marry men in Islam.
Maria B responded with a video clarifying that the Fatwa was revoked by Islamic scholars ten years ago.
She said that at the time of its issuance, people were unaware of the distinction between intersex and transgender individuals.
"Intersex refers to a person with genital deformities, whereas transgenders are agents of Qoum-e-Loot," Maria added.
The fashion designer also shared some old footage of Mehrub, in which she was seen claiming to be a gay person.
"The LGTBQ Mafia is always making false allegations. This was a fatwa, not an Islamic law, by a cleric. And it was revoked," she wrote in the caption of the video.
"You are free to do whatever you want in your bedrooms! It's between you and Allah. Just stop dragging Islam into this!! When you make false claims in Islam, we will not stay quiet. Haram is haram. Your opinion doesn't matter."
