Renowned vocalist Ali Zafar expressed his disagreement with the remarks made by religious scholar, Dr Zakir Naik who labelled unmarried women as "bazaari aurat" (women of the streets).
Earlier, the cleric said in a speech, "There are only two options for women, either marry a man who already has a wife, or become a 'bazari aurat' or public property."
He further remarked, "I do not have a more appropriate term than this."
Dr Naik advised women unable to find an unmarried man to consider marrying a person who is already married rather than becoming a “bazari aurat.”
He claimed that a virtuous woman would always choose the first option, marrying an already-married man.
In response, Ali Zafar took to X to share his thoughts, saying, "With all due respect, Dr Sahab, there is always a third option. A woman can live a respectful and independent life as a working woman, a mother, or both together, or the life she chooses for herself, just like millions of women around the world do, and are equally respected by millions of men."

"The problem lies with the men who would see them as bazaari,'" Zafar added.
He also referenced a Quranic verse, Surah An-Nur 24:30, where God instructs men to "lower their gaze and guard their chastity," before issuing similar guidance to women.
Ali Zafar expressed that "women have been suppressed for centuries" and were often denied the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their aspirations.
He emphasised that it is high time society changes its approach toward women.
Zafar addressed Dr Naik, saying that his remarks were meant as constructive criticism and hoped they would not cause any offense.
