3 'influential' suspects arrested after assault on Karachi University professor

Police have arrested three suspects for their alleged involvement in an assault of a University of Karachi professor and his nephew with pistol butts after a minor traffic accident near Safoora Chowrangi.

Dr Professor Mohammed Arif Khan Saqi, chairman of the university’s Islamic Learning Department, and his nephew, Mohammed Waheed Rehman, were injured in the assault.

The police said that the professor was travelling towards the university when the incident occurred. According to the police, the suspects were reversing their vehicle when it collided with the professor’s car, leading to an argument that allegedly turned violent.

They said the professor was issued a letter for medico-legal examination, after which a case was registered at Sachal police station.

Sachal SHO Aijaz Pathan said that the arrested suspects are influential individuals who owned a restaurant in Safoora. He said police are carrying out further raids to arrest the remaining suspects.

A case was registered on Dr Saqi’s complaint under Sections 147, 148, 149, 324 and 342 of the Pakistan Penal Code, relating to rioting, rioting while armed with a deadly weapon, unlawful assembly, attempted murder and wrongful confinement.

The police said further investigation into the incident was under way.
