Action sought against doctor who operated on non-pregnant woman in Karachi hospital

Police have recommended action against a doctor and the administration of a private hospital in Karachi’s Nazimabad for allegedly performing an operation on a woman without confirming her pregnancy.

The police wrote to the Sindh Healthcare Commission seeking action against the hospital administration and the doctor concerned. According to the letter, the woman was not pregnant but underwent surgery at the hospital.

The police said that the operation was performed without a complete examination and necessary medical tests, which indicated negligence on the part of the hospital administration and relevant staff.

The woman’s medical file, her husband’s application and the medico-legal report have also been sent to the Healthcare Commission. The development comes days after a case surfaced involving the alleged disappearance of a newborn following a C-section at the same private hospital in Nazimabad.

The woman’s family had accused the hospital administration of making the baby disappear and staged a protest, during which the hospital was allegedly vandalised.

During the investigation, the woman told police that she was not pregnant but had been pretending to be pregnant due to domestic pressure. The police said that the woman also obtained a fake ultrasound report to support her claim of pregnancy.

According to the police, while the woman’s deception was a separate matter, the hospital’s failure to conduct a complete examination and necessary tests before performing the operation raised serious questions about the negligence of the hospital and the doctor.
