Three policemen were martyred and six militants were shot dead late Friday night when armed insurgents launched an attack on a police training school in Dera Ismail Khan, according to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police.
In a statement, the police said the attack began when the militants rammed an explosive-laden truck into the school’s main gate, causing a section of the wall to collapse. Two policemen posted at the gate were martyred instantly as the wall came down.
After the explosion, militants dressed in various uniforms entered the compound and opened heavy fire, the statement said, adding that one of the policemen on duty responded bravely, returning fire at the attackers.
The police added that the militants also hurled hand grenades during the exchange, killing a third cop.
A fierce gun battle between security forces and the militants continued for several hours. Following a joint five-hour-long operation by police and other security forces, all six militants were killed.

The police recovered suicide vests, explosives, weapons, and ammunition from the attackers, the police statement said. Six security personnel were also injured in the operation and were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital.
The police confirmed that all trainee recruits inside the training facility were safely evacuated to secure locations, preventing what could have been a major tragedy.
District Police Officer (DPO) Sahibzada Sajjad Ahmed said around 200 people — including trainees, instructors, and staff — were present at the school when the attack occurred but were successfully rescued.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed offered prayers for the slain officers and vowed that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. He also announced special rewards for the officers and personnel who took part in the successful operation.
The police said the area has been cleared and a search and sweep operation is underway.
