A British-Pakistani graduate has filed a case against the London School of Economics (LSE) for a marking error that deprived her of the opportunity to pursue an MPhil at University of Cambridge.

Rehab Shaikh graduated from LSE in 2023, but she claimed that her undergraduate dissertation was checked by only one examiner instead of the usual two.

She was originally given 57 marks, a score she did not accept as correct, so she appealed to LSE to re-check her dissertation. The re-checking brought her marks up to 72.

However, the revised grade could be of any benefit to her as the previous error already affected her chances of admission to Cambridge’s MPhil program.

According to Rehab, she has filed a case against LSE to seek an official acknowledgment of the university’s error and a compensation for it. She also aims to prevent similar issues for future students by fighting this case legally.
