Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has put forth a proposal to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, suggesting the return of the 2018 electoral mandate in exchange for governance until the upcoming 2024 elections.
During his address in the Senate, Dar stated, "Should you return the 2018 mandate to us, we will assume governance and you may proceed with the 2024 elections as planned." He also indicated that any concerns regarding the elections scheduled for February 8 could be resolved through the judicial system.
Dar emphasized the collaborative efforts between the government and PTI concerning significant appointments.
"We appointed the individual you nominated as chief election commissioner and also made the person you preferred the chairman of NADRA," he remarked, noting that the legitimacy of the 2018 mandate was not contested at that time.
In reference to PTI's choice of protest locations, he questioned the decision to select D-Chowk when alternatives, such as Sangjani, were available.
He highlighted that the protests coincided with critical events, including the visit of the Chinese Prime Minister and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference. Dar disclosed that the Chinese ambassador had requested a delay in the protests, a request that PTI declined.
Additionally, Dar praised JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman for his statesmanship during the SCO summit and expressed regret over the failure to elect 11 senators in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, deeming it unfortunate.
