Karachi police have lodged a terrorism case against the driver of a van who rammed his vehicle into a tent of mourners outside an imambargah in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA) last night.

The driver's three companions have also been named in the first information report (FIR).

According to the FIR, the vehicle allegedly smashed through security barriers before hitting the tent where mourners, including women and children, were seated. The complainant claimed the van was being driven at high speed and the incident appeared to be a deliberate act rather than an accident.

The FIR stated that the attack may have been part of a wider plot aimed at creating fear and unrest, especially in light of repeated threats from banned and sectarian groups.

Investigators have also included video footage of the incident, circulating on social media, as part of the case record, saying it supports the claim that the vehicle was deliberately driven towards the gathering.

The driver was identified as Mohammed Zahid, while three others travelling with him — Bahadur Saeed, Momin Khan and Arsalan alias Nadan — were also nominated in the case.

Police said further investigation is under way to determine the motive and possible links of the suspects.
