Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has announced that a full-scale e-ticketing system for traffic violations in Karachi will be launched on October 27 under the Safe City programme.

Speaking to reporters, IG Memon said that the traffic police and the Safe City team are jointly working on the technical framework and programming required to roll out the initiative.

He explained that the issuance of traffic challans had been temporarily halted on technical grounds, as the 10-year contract with the company providing challan machines and managing fine collections expired on September 30.

“No new contract has been signed with that company or any other firm,” Memon added. The Sindh police chief said that the temporary suspension of fines would have no significant impact. “If traffic challans are not issued for a few weeks, it doesn’t make much difference,” he said.

Memon clarified that some dummy e-challans are still being generated as part of system testing, but these are not being sent to citizens.

The new e-ticketing system, he said, will be implemented uniformly across Karachi following its formal inauguration by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on October 27. The initiative is expected to bring a marked reduction in traffic violations across the city, he added.

Responding to a question, the IG said a redressal committee has been formed to address public complaints related to e-ticketing. The committee will include representatives from the SP, DSP, and the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

“If anyone has a grievance regarding an e-challan, they can submit their complaint along with the challan to this committee for review and resolution,” Memon said.
